It’s the last day of March, and everyone in Minnesota is anxious to get out and enjoy regular concerts again. What better way to do that than to head to the Fillmore and watch metalcore veterans, The Devil Wears Prada? Their stop in Minneapolis is a little over halfway through the “Flowers Tour,” so they’ve had several weeks to perfect this run. Sometimes opening bands can be generic or boring, but that was not the case tonight! The night started with strong support from I Promised the World, Split Chain, and Four Year Strong, each bringing their own energy and helping set the stage for an unforgettable headlining performance.
The Devil Wears Prada’s setlist weighed heavily with songs from the band’s last album, “Flowers.” They opened with “Where the Flowers Never Grow” and “So Low,” then transitioned into their ever-popular “Danger: Wildman” and “Watchtower,” and the crowd loved every second of it. Some of the other songs performed from the latest album were “Everybody Knows,” “For You,” and “When You’re Gone.” Many fans have criticized the band as leaning too far into pop sensibilities. But honestly, I like it. Remember when Metallica released “Load” and “Reload”? Yeah, it’s a totally different sound, but it gave the band a much wider fanbase. Likewise, “Flowers” is a big shift, but I think it stands strong in its own right.
That said, Prada doesn’t forget their roots. They played songs from their middle era, like “Kansas” and “Chemical,” as well as “Outnumbered” from the first “Zombie” EP and their 2009 hit “Dez Moines.” For me (a fan since the band hit the scene over 20 years ago), the highlight of the night was “Dogs Can Grow Beards All Over.”
The band ended with a mind-blowing encore that included: “Play the Old Shit,” “Assistant to the Regional Manager,” and “Hey John, What’s Your Name Again?” and everyone went wild. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a newcomer, The Devil Wears Prada leaves a lasting impression and great memories. Don’t miss this tour!
