“Placebo: The Photography of Scarlet Page” Opens Tomorrow in NYC

“PLACEBO: THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF SCARLET PAGE” OPENS TOMORROW AT MORRISON HOTEL GALLERY (NYC)

EXHIBITION OPENING COINCIDES WITH PLACEBO’S FIRST

NORTH AMERICAN TOUR SINCE 2014

April 20, 2023, NEW YORK – Placebo, who kicked off their North American tour on Monday with a show at Mexico City’s Palacio de Los Deportes, are profiled in a new gallery exhibition, “Placebo: The Photography of Scarlet Page.”

Scarlet Page is an award-winning and internationally-acclaimed photographer known for her distinct documentary-style reportage of superstar musicians. For nearly 30 years, Scarlet’s work has graced album covers & artwork, tour materials, and book & magazine covers. Her prints have become collectibles, and Scarlet is sought out by the major record labels as one of the top artists in the industry.

Morrison Hotel Gallery, who recently began representing the iconic photographer, celebrate the partnership with very special exhibition of her work with the British alt-rock band, Placebo, curated by Gallery Director Marcelle Murdock. A preview event kicks off the exhibit this evening at Morrison Hotel Gallery’s New York City location, with the showing running through May 7. The collection highlights Scarlet’s 10 years photographing the band, including exclusive images never before available in print. There will also be a limited run of co-signed prints, signed by Scarlet Page, Brian Molko, and Stefan Olsdal.

“I’m very excited to begin this next chapter of my career with Morrison Hotel Gallery—the Gallery’s taste and photographer roster is peerless,” Scarlet says. “I thought the ideal first exhibition with them would be of my work with Placebo; a band that’s very dear to my heart, and whose uncompromising image is perfect for a Morrison Hotel Gallery showing.”

Placebo was formed in London in 1994 by vocalist–guitarist Brian Molko and bassist–guitarist Stefan Olsdal. The band is as much known for its adventurous and stylish rock ‘n’ roll as it is beloved for its gender-bending fashion. In recent years, the band has explored the ubiquitous spread of filters in media and self-categorization on social media, formerly the domain of celebrities and public figures. Their most recent album is a “synthesizer-led soundtrack to the end of the world” saturated with the zeitgeist of our time – a seemingly-insurmountable descent into despair, contrasting with glimmers of hope and possibility. To date, Placebo has released eight studio albums, all of which have reached the Top 20 in the United Kingdom, and the band has sold over 13 million records worldwide while they collaborated with artists such as David Bowie, Justin Warfield, Michael Stipe, and Alison Mosshart.

Scarlet’s Morrison Hotel Gallery premiere is the first time her Placebo work has been

exhibited in full. A sample of the collection includes a portrait of Brian as a fallen angel,

his jewel-like eyes full of emotion connecting with the viewer despite his cavalier posture. Next, a shot of Brian and Stefan together, classically posed head-on with piercing gazes – something both masculine and feminine, dark and light. Finally, a working studio shot giving us a glimpse into Placebo in their element, caught in a moment of pure being – energy, sound and self.
