A couple of weeks ago, I received the promotional link to a band called dead7 (Jason Kozik-vocals, Dexter Greer-guitar, Tim Quinn-guitar, Stephen Salyer-bass, and Zach Guinn-drums). I had never heard of this band before, but this publicist has a great track record for great bands, so I agreed to check it out and give it a review. I’m so glad I did!
Dead7 is a band out of St. Louis that’s been grinding for a few years now. They’ve built a decent following by playing some pretty big festivals and sharing the stage with bands like Incubus and Bad Omens, and have just recently signed with Sharptone Records. “Love What You Can While You Still Got Something Left to Love” is their first full-length album.
I didn’t expect to like this record as much as I do. I figured it would be another heavy band doing the loud-soft thing, but dead7 pulls it off in a way that feels authentic. This album sounds like five guys working through heartbreak, frustration, and maybe some hope, too.
What stood out to me right away is how they mix a lot of things together—huge guitars, electronic stuff, and some simple, honest melodies. They released some great singles, including “HOLE” and “BLUR,” along with accompanying music videos. I’ve listened to the album several times now, and there aren’t any songs that I’d skip. Some songs hit hard, and some just let you sit in the feelings. My favorites are “PLEASE” and “FLOATING.” I was surprised that they closed the album with a ballad. It’s called “DOPESICK,” and it’s one of the catchier songs on the album, so it’s cool that they ended on that note.
The album is not polished or perfect, but I think that’s the point. dead7 reminds me a little of Wage War, but much more raw and less produced. It’s refreshing.
If you like music that’s a little heavy but also a little vulnerable, this one’s worth checking out. It’s not reinventing anything, but it’s honest, and that’s enough for me.
