Salt Lake City was turned into a full-blown rock ’n’ roll celebration on September 21 as Mötley Crüe, Tesla, and Extreme brought the Return of the Carnival of Sins tour to the Utah First Credit Union Amphitheatre in West Valley City. With three powerhouse bands sharing one stage, the evening offered a memorable combination of classic hard rock, soaring melodies, guitar fireworks, and the unmistakable attitude that has defined these bands for decades.
Extreme opened the night with a performance that immediately reminded the crowd why the band remains such a respected force in hard rock. Launching into “Decadence Dance,” Extreme wasted little time establishing the evening’s energy. “Play With Me,” “Hole Hearted,” and the timeless “More Than Words” showcased the group’s ability to move effortlessly between blistering musicianship and softer, melodic moments. Nuno Bettencourt was particularly impressive, bringing his trademark guitar virtuosity to the stage, while “Get the Funk Out” gave the crowd another opportunity to let loose. The set closed with a spirited Ozzy Osbourne medley featuring “I Don’t Know,” “Bark at the Moon,” and “Crazy Train.”
Tesla followed with a set steeped in the sound of classic American hard rock. “Modern Day Cowboy” provided a powerful opening before the band rolled through favorites including “Hang Tough,” “The Way It Is,” “Heaven’s Trail (No Way Out),” and “Call It What You Want.” Tesla’s acoustic performance added another dimension, particularly on “Love Song,” while “Little Suzi” and “Signs” gave the set a nostalgic finish. Their 50-minute performance was a perfect bridge between Extreme’s musicianship and the spectacle that was about to follow.
Then came Mötley Crüe.
From the opening blast of “Red Hot,” it was obvious that the headliners had come prepared to deliver a celebration rather than simply a greatest-hits performance. The set was loaded with classic material, including “Louder Than Hell,” “Wild Side,” “Shout at the Devil,” “Too Fast for Love,” “Looks That Kill,” and “Too Young to Fall in Love.” The band continued through “Take Me to the Top,” “Primal Scream,” “Afraid,” and the emotional “Home Sweet Home.”
The final stretch was pure Crüe adrenaline. “Smokin’ in the Boys Room,” “Live Wire,” “Girls, Girls, Girls,” and “Dr. Feelgood” kept the crowd moving before “Kickstart My Heart” delivered the explosive finale. Guitarist John 5 added his own distinctive firepower to the familiar songs, while the band’s elaborate production reinforced the carnival atmosphere that has always been central to Mötley Crüe’s identity.
What made the Salt Lake City show especially enjoyable was the depth of the lineup. Extreme supplied technical brilliance, Tesla brought heartfelt hard rock, and Mötley Crüe delivered the larger-than-life spectacle fans came to see. Together, the three bands created an evening that celebrated the enduring appeal of classic rock without treating the past like a museum piece.
For longtime fans, it was a chance to hear songs that have been part of the soundtrack of their lives. For newer fans, it was a reminder that great rock songs, powerful performances, and a little bit of rock ’n’ roll excess never really go out of style.
