Scott Stapp – Higher Power (Album Review)

The highly anticipated fourth solo album by former Creed frontman Scott Stapp is set to be released on March 15 through Napalm Records.

The title track “Higher Power” was released in August as a single and is already blowing up the airwaves with a big fan response, landing at number 12 on the Mainstream Rock Airplay. It’s honestly the most prominent song on the album and has everything you would expect from Stapp. It’s the highest charting single of his solo career thus far. The song is a declaration of death and rebirth, rising from the ashes of the old and starting anew.

“Dead Man’s Trigger” will be a favorite for the rock fans with its thick, grungy rhythm and the relatable message of battling the devil on your shoulder.

“When Love Is Not Enough” is a ballad about seeking peace over staying in the battle and learning to live alone while embracing one’s weakness and fear of doing so.

“What I Deserve” is an anthem about redemption and pushing through mistakes. The guitar work by Yiannis Papadopoulos is incredible and helps spin the tale of life, love and the struggle to stay on the good side of things while balancing being human. Papadopoulos also appears on the song “Quicksand” and brings his magical guitar abilities to both tracks.

“If These Walls Could Talk” is Stapp’s haunting testimony of his struggles with alcohol, the damages of his demons from the past and finding his way back to a better self. The talented Dorothy Martin of the hard rock band Dorothy has a guest spot on this track. The harmonizing is beautiful and it only strengthens the song making it into a full blown, powerhouse ballad.

“You’re Not Alone” carries the reflective message of calling oneself out on all the mistakes made. It’s a requiem of the past life and the time lost and an offer of hope for things to come.

Higher Power is truly a  journey through growing pains and putting the past to rest.

This album by one of the most famous voices in rock and roll, does not disappoint. Scott Stapp has come back from a very publicized near self-destruction with a fantastic body of work. The album is a true testament of starting over and the magic of healing through faith and music.

The Higher Power Tour kicked off on March 10 with dates through March in the US.
