If early 2000s metalcore and 80s pop had a baby, it would be “Neon Inferno,” the latest release from One Morning Left. This album blends crushing breakdowns with infectious synth-driven melodies. I had not heard of this Finnish group before and checked out some of their back catalog. Much like their previous work, this album is equal parts chaotic, energetic, and surprisingly catchy.
The opening track, “Emerald Dragon,” pulls listeners into a futuristic world with pulsing electronic beats paired with heavy guitars and guttural screams. The production quality is stellar, with each track crafted to balance the aggression of metal with the vibrant neon glow of electronic music. Tracks like “Neon Inferno (Paradise)” and “Reunion” are standout examples of this, delivering punishing riffs alongside danceable, high-energy electronic elements.
The first single, “Summerlovin,” was released on April 25. The official music video gives new listeners a taste of the band. It also features guest vocals from Olli Herman of Reckless Love. You can easily tell that this band doesn’t take life too seriously and has a lot of fun making music videos. Their second single, “Michael, the Knight,” is another example of a catchy tune with a ridiculous music video. I remember seeing it for the first time and asking myself, “What the heck did I just watch?” The song is a nod to the 80 TV series, “Knight Rider.”
My favorite tracks are “Ride Till I Die” and “3, 2, 1, Go!” The former is heavier and mixes in a healthy dose of aggressive guitar riffs and death metal growls. The latter reminds me of a song System of a Down would write if they were an 80s band. It starts in a very Daron Malakian-ish way and switches tempos and vocal styles throughout. Halfway through, there’s an animal noise surprise. It’s a great track if you’re looking for something wild.
Neon Inferno is a bold, fast-paced journey through metalcore’s evolving landscape. If you’re strictly into the heavy stuff, this band might not be for you, but it’s a must-listen for those looking for something fresh. One Morning Left continues to prove they are a force to be reckoned with, blending genres with unapologetic flair and electrifying energy.
