If the name isn’t familiar to those dealing with the daily, overwhelming grind of life, then one only needs to look at the last two letters, V and H.
The captain piloting all aspects of the Mammoth WVG ship is Wolfgang Van Halen, son of Edward Van Halen.
With Van Halen in the title, there are high expectations for WVH. Entering the audio realm of Mammoth WVH, an open mind is a must.
On the release, the quest for WVH is to set his own musical identity, away from the shadow of the VH letters. The 14 tracks on Mammoth WVH have provided WVH a legitimate starting point.
An impressive fact that listeners should notice is WVH handles all aspects of Mammoth WVH. From writing to vocals, guitars, bass and drums, WVH displays solid musicianship for each track. It’s something the listener will notice. There is diversity of the tracks that have a 90’s feel to them.
Track one, “Mr. Ed” may just be the catchiest of all with the riff and head bobbing rhythm. From the heavy “Don’t Back Down” to “Resolve,” “The Big Picture,” “Think It Over,” “Won’t Back Down” and others, all tracks respectively hold their own.
Approaching the midpoint, the straightforward “You’ll Be the One” shows that WVH has some vocal range and tops it off with a nice lead.
The track and first single and video “Distance,” is a tribute to his father. The track is an emotional ride and the video only yanks those emotions harder.
WVH did accomplish step one, distance from the two letters. Mammoth WVH is an all around respectable first impression to the music world.
