Bush brought their greatest hits to Salt Lake City on July 31st at Utah First Credit Union Amphitheatre. The chemicals between fans and the bands mixed as three other bands supported Bush on the tour.
First out was Tim Montana, who played a solid set with his brand of rock mixed with some country influences dabbled in. Some of the highlights from his set included “Get You Some,” “Shut Me Out,” and “The Devil You Know.” Make sure and get to the show on time to see Tim. His stage presence was amazing and he is worth a listen.
Up next was Candlebox. Most of us remember them from the 90’s with some successful hits and I myself fell into that crowed too. Never seeing them live, I had no idea what to expect and was surprised at their presence on stage. Singer Kevin Martin moved about the stage nonstop and interacted with the crowd throughout their set. From opening song “Arrow,” Candlebox had my attention. As they made their way through their set, the songs continued to grab me. “Blossom” was a ballade but was played with intense passion and has since made it to my playlist. As the nine song set came to an end their two biggest hits would not be passed by. “Far Behind” and “You” are what brought Candlebox notoriety and brought the crowed to life.
Next was the grunge legend Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains. Having been one of the few that saw Jerry with Alice in Chains on the “Dirt” tour, I know the legacy that he holds in music history. Seeing him on his own I am always amazed because most do not realize the vocal contribution, he was responsible for in Alice in Chains. Seeing him live provides that right out in the open. His solo songs like “Psychotic Break” and “Atone” perfectly show his ability to carry a song from beginning to end. The true joy for myself and others was seeing the songs that Jerry wrote during his time in Alice in chains and hearing his voice carry classics like “Them Bones,” “Sea of Sorrow,” and of course “Would?.”
After a short break it was time for Bush to hit the stage. The band came out firing on all cylinders with “Everything Zen.” As fun as it was hearing Gavin belt out some of Bush’s greatest hits it was also fun to hear some of the songs that may have been hits but were overshadowed by the mega hits. Songs like “The Sound of Winter” clicked into my brain again giving me a glimpse into my own past remembering that time in my life. Also “Heavy Is the Ocean” provided me screen shot back in time.
As the show wound down into a lengthy encore, “More Than Machines” paved the way into an amazing cover of The Beatles “Come Together.” The show came to an end with “Glycerin” and “Comedown.” Happy fans could be heard all throughout the venue commenting on their favorite song being played as well as the quality of the show and Gavin’s voice.
Loaded: The Greatest Hits Tour is not one to be missed. Between the support acts and the energy level Bush played it is safe to say they will continue to not only make music but tour which is great for fans who want to remember the days of their youth. Look for Bush on tour in a town close to you.
